Philosophy
The program at Henson Valley is based on the work of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Montessori philosophy has as its foundation the belief that “education as an aid to life, should be a source of joy”. It aims to aid the child in reaching his or her fullest potential through independence, inner discipline and discovery in order to become a mature, responsible and happy adult. Montessori is more than a means of education, it is more than a method ; it is an “aid to life”.
Method & Materials
The Montessori environment introduces the child to the joys of learning, to discovery and understanding of the world in which we live. The entire primary program is based on the child’s need to act freely, to choose his or her own tasks; to work at his or her own pace and rhythm. In the classroom, the teacher guides the child to build him or herself through purposeful activities and experiences.
The classroom is designed as a "children's house," equipped with child-sized furnishings. From a wide range of available materials within their reach, students select projects appropriate to their stages of development. Often children of mixed ages work together, building a sense of community and mutual respect. According to their readiness, students learn reading, writing, mathematics, geography and science. Music and art and Modern languages provide added stimulation to their interest and joy in life.
